NEWARK, N.J. – A man accused of attacking a New Jersey woman as she watched cartoons with her 3-year-old and while being recorded by a nanny cam was once sentenced to 10 years in prison for a similar crime.
The Star-Ledger reports that public records show Shawn Custis pleaded guilty to a 1991 case in Delran.
Authorities say he broke into a house 22 years ago and started going through a jewelry box in a bedroom, then hid in a closet when the front door opened before attacking the woman who lived there in front of her 18-month-old daughter.
He has been convicted since then of 12 different felonies around New Jersey, according to the newspaper.
Custis, now 42, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to attempted murder, robbery, burglary and child endangerment in the Millburn attack on June 21. SOURCE
Since my posting of the video of this violent attack, the man responsible has been caught but as we read about his criminal past I find one question has not been answered.
What was this animal doing out on the streets? He had done this before, has been convicted of 12 other felonies and yet was allowed another shot at freedom and almost kills a woman as he savagely beat her in front of her child. Something is seriously wrong with the penal system in NJ I would like to see Christie get on this one and demand changes that would include no plea bargains for anybody with a history including a violent felony. It is ridiculous that this guy was not locked away for the rest of his life.
